Celebrate Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss wrote many books filled with rhyming words and silly characters.  But he taught many great lessons in his stories so we can live a better life. His birthday was on March 2nd.



Aloha Parents,

All the students are amazed at their plants that are growing so quickly! Some of them are a bit overwatered, but that's okay.  On the weekends, the little plants can dry out a bit. The plan is to watch and write about the growth of their plants until Friday, March 20th, when the students will have the opportunity to explain about 'Plants and Me' at the Learning Showcase.  Hope you will be able to attend one of the two sessions: 9:30-9:50 or 10:30-10:50.

We will be creating a map to show things we get from plants. Each child is asked to bring in 1 or 2 pictures from magazines or their own drawings about 5x5 inches in size.  For instance, from corn we get gas, oil, adhesives, wax paper, Softsoap, Windex, etc. From tomatoes, we get ketchup, salsa, etc. From trees, we get pencils, wooden spoons, paper bags, etc. Your child will be sharing and explaining their pictures to their classmates. Pictures are due by Monday, March 16th.

Friendly reminders:

• Tuesday, March 10th - Spring Portrait background choice form due. Individual pictures taken in the Gym.  Please dress your child appropriately.
• Thursday, March 12th - Spring Higan Service Temple Service. Please dress your child appropriately.
• Monday, March 16th - 'How do we use plants?' pictures due.
• Friday, March 20th - Learning Showcase - 'Plants and Me'.  School dismissal at 11:30.
• Monday, March 30th - March Book Share, MyOn, and IXL (Categories K {Positions} and Q {Measurement}) due

Dr. Seuss wrote many funny books! He also wrote the best rhyming books! We listened to some of them including The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, The Foot Book, One Fish, Two Fish, etc. Now you can see some of the activities we enjoyed working on this week.

This free slideshow personalized with Smilebox Aloha Parents,   Everyone had fun touring Pali Safeway, learning about items in each department.  They especially enjoyed the opportunity to select and purchase a healthy fruit or snack at the checkout counter. The managers must have enjoyed our visit as they gave us 2 large trays of assorted cookies and a container of grapes to take back to school.  How nice of them!   Swimming begins on Monday, March 3rd.  Please be sure to have a swimsuit, towel, slippers (not crocs), sunscreen (optional), and a plastic bag for their wet clothes in a swim bag.  The swim bag could be a recycled fabric or nylon bag, but not plastic bags (Longs, Times, etc.). Those are very thin and a bit small so be sure the swim bag is roomy enough to fit all their swim supplies.  Labeling everything is greatly encouraged!   Please remember: Tuesday, March 4th - Spring pictures Wednesday, March 5th - Library books due Wednesday, March 5th - Hansel and Gretel Play at the Hawaii Theater.  Attire - HMS t-shirt and sport shoes.  Lunch will be eaten upon our return. There have been numerous compliments about your awesome decorated shamrocks that were made to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. All of them were unique and showed the love in your family.


Just to remind you:

• Friday, March 8th - Swim Day! Your child should bring a separate bag with a towel, swim clothes, plastic bag for wet clothes, and rubber slippers.  Please label all items with your child's name and room number.

Seuss Week

We celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday all week long. There were books we read, videos to watch and many fun activities every single day this week.  I wonder if we could have a birthday that could last a whole week  instead of just for one day?

March into March

Monday was one of the best P.E. days for the students as they began swimming lessons with Ms. Whitney and Mr. Kimura at the helm. The newbies and experienced swimmers enjoyed the class by splashing water on themselves, giggling and swimming.  The children were familiar with the routine of showering before entering the pool and changing themselves afterwards which helped make the P.E. class run smoothly.

K-1 celebrated reading with Dr. Seuss in the classroom on Wednesday, March 2nd.  Besides listening to some of his stories, they enjoyed 'green eggs' and partnered with their 4th grade buddy in a writing/illustration lesson.

They have been sharpening their concept of addition with numerous hands-on and engaging activities.  Ask them to explain their work that is on display.

Ms. Marj, a former HMS Counselor, was invited as a guest reader on Friday.  The children were all ears when she read Too Many Mangos, By Tammy Paikai. The story, with a local flavor, is about Tutu Kane  who asked his grandchildren Kama and Nani to pick some mangoes from his tree. When Tutu Kane realized that they had picked  too many mangoes, he sends Kama and Nani to share some with the neighbors. While doing this, they were given goodies in return for their generosity.  Ms. Marj  also brought samples of our delicious fruit for everyone to taste and a fresh mango. Some students hadn't seen a mango from the tree.  During this read-aloud,  they shared the excitement and sheer fun of a new book with its  local characters. Children  also learned that sharing can bring much joy to others as well as to themselves.
Mahalo to everyone with your donations and/or offering to assist with the K-1 game at the HMS Fair on Saturday, March 19th. Please advise either Mrs. Nagamine or myself if you need to make any changes for your shift.

Reminders:
P.E. (swim days) is scheduled for Mondays. There is no P.E. on Thursdays.  Please remember their plastic bag, as well as their towel, swim clothes, slippers, goggles,  etc.  should be labeled with their name and grade. The lost and found box  is overflowing with numerous unlabeled items.
