100th Day of School Celebration

The  Kindergartners had an awesome morning counting to 100 in numerous ways at our 'party'.  Besides drawing 100 circles, writing their first name 100 times, the best part was counting 10 pieces of 10 different kinds of snacks.  Who wouldn't want to count mini chocolate chips, fruit loops, pretzels, arare, marshmallows, etc. as quickly as possible? The reward was to eat  the snacks they counted.
Their 100th  day of school  projects  certainly displayed everyone's creativity. Visit the classroom to view their poster boards.

Sharing and Learning While Having Fun

Mahalo nui loa for attending our Presentation of Learning.  The children were anxious to share what they have been learning these past few weeks. We hope you enjoyed the morning in K-1.

Tuesday, January 25th marks our 100th day of school. Our classroom will be filled with all of your children's wonderful projects.  We can't wait to see what will be created.

Foster Botanical Garden will be a fun walking tour on Wednesday.  Many thanks to all those willing parents who will be chaperoning the students.  I am sure all of you wish you could enjoy the day with us, but there will be a few more field trips  you can  sign up for before the school year ends.

K-1 Happy Talk - January 14, 2011

We've been in school for almost 100 days.  Hard to believe isn't it.  Many students shared what they plan to make for their 100 day project. They may bring in their creations before or on Tuesday, January 25th. I'm sure they'll be all unusual and awesome displays.

Several of  our students have posts on the Teddy Bear blog.  If you would like to  read and share their experiences with our class teddy bear with your child, please click  here  . A few more students are anxious to have their pictures and their comments posted  with Keikiokekai so we'll continue to pass our bear around.

Our Skype pals in Massachusetts compiled a lovely book with adventures they'd like to have with our students. The book is being circulated among the students (in alphabetical order according to their last name) to take home and look at  with you. A parent log book  is also being sent home so you can comment on their stories.

Our newly installed Promethean  ActivBoard   is really bringing our classroom to life. It captures the imagination of all types of learners - the auditory, visual, and kinesthetic.  The children enjoy it and are more eager to participate.  They can't wait to use the activpen and write on the board!

If you have any of the following, please don't hesitate to ask your child to bring it to class:
1. Labels and packaging from food or other items for the Environmental Print wall
2. Interesting  or noteworthy pictures from the newspaper or magazines for the K-1 Buzz wall
3. Old newspaper for class activities such as painting, etc.

Everyone had a busy week learning and collaborating , but most of all, enjoying themselves.  They are truly 'Working Together'.

K-1 Happy Talk - January 7, 2011

The children completed their first week of school after Winter Break.  It seemed a long time to be away from school. Besides showing an eagerness to learn, they were thrilled to see their pals again.

Students grow and learn, curriculum shift, ideas and methods evolve and return. Education is always seeking what’s next, especially in  our 21st century learning and technology.  As a result, a Promethean Board was just installed in K-1.  The Interactive Whiteboard or IWB is a large display that combines a whiteboard, power of a computer and front projection. Promethean interactive whiteboards will engage the students with vivid images, video, and audio.

The interactive whiteboard enables anything that can be seen or done on a computer screen to be projected onto  the Promethean whiteboard – bringing every classroom to life. Your children  will be inspired and learning will be brought to the next level. Instruction will begin using the IWB soon.

Hoonko Services, to be held  at the Temple, is scheduled for Wednesday, January 12th.  It is the memorial service of our founder, Shinran Shonin. Please dress your child appropriately. Therefore, Buddhist Education class on Monday is cancelled.

The '100th Day of School' is Tuesday, January 25th.  I am sure you and your child have been brainstorming what 100 items they would like to collect for their project board. After making a decision, s/he should count, arrange and display the items in an interesting way. Your child should write the title and the numbers from 1-100 near each item. Displays can be brought in anytime before January 25th.
The Kindergarten  grade level will also celebrate this monumental day with a snack party.  More  information will be given within the next week.
