Halloween was fa'boo'lous.  We wish we could have a Halloween Parade and Monster Cookies every day in October.

Can you believe it is November? I don't know where the time goes, but the days are flying by quickly!

Mahalo to everyone who generously shared Halloween goodies.  The keiki were beyond excited receiving the treats.  Hopefully, they'll save a few of their sweets for the weeks ahead and share some with you. Please have your child return the blue Walmart recyclable bags on Monday, November 3rd as they will be used for future holiday treats.

IXL is a great website for math practice, which can build confidence and accuracy. Students receive detailed tips if their answer is incorrect and there is the microphone icon which helps them listen to the problem if they can't read it. The K-1 keiki mentioned how they enjoyed working on IXL because of the rewards and immediate feedback.

The next IXL Math assignment, due on Tuesday, November 25th is:

• D. Numbers and counting up to 20
• E. Numbers and counting beyond 20

The myON reading assignment (minimum of 5 books) and Book Share will also have a due date of Tuesday, November 25th.

Have you heard of Starfall.com?  It is a great educational website that provides interactive content to help young children with the basics of phonics, reading, and a little bit of math. It uses cute animation and sounds to engage the youngsters in the learning process. This site is a great supplemental tool and appeals to different learning styles. The best part about this is there is no membership fees.  However, there is a charge for the app. The children were excited about the site when they saw it this week. You may want to check it out!

Halloween Fun 2013

What do you like about Halloween?  Most of us admitted we like the candy the best, but dressing up and seeing people get scared are other reasons why we like Halloween!

Everyone was in the Halloween spirit on Thursday and had loads of fun!  The parade was the best ever and the Pizza Hut lunch was a hit too.  Mahalo for those who shared goodie bags with their peers! There was enough goodies/treats for them to last a long, long time.

The Kindergarten classes will celebrate the 100th day of school (January 17th) which is literally the 100th day of the school year. From the very first day of school, they began keeping track of the number of days they've been in school in anticipation of the 100th day. More importantly, it is a wonderful way for the keiki to celebrate the various mathematical concepts that they have learned using the number 100.

It has been a tradition for the students, with their parents, to work together and create something that will be shared on our 100th day of school! So........the 100th Day project is...... a 100th Day T-Shirt to be worn on our 100th day of school! Brainstorm with your child so s/he can pick 100 objects to decorate a t-shirt with. Objects that could be used include ribbons, sequins, buttons, etc.  They can be glued, drawn, tied, painted, or sewn on. For added educational value, encourage your keiki to practice counting by 5's and 10's while laying out 100 objects; this will help boost their counting skills.

HMS Halloween Parade is planned for Friday, October 28th, starting at 8:30am.  Everyone is invited  to watch faculty, staff, and keiki in Halloween attire  parade around the blacktop. Please bring your child dressed in costume to school.( No gore, violence or weapons, please)  At  8:20, K-1 will be led to the blacktop and seated  on a blue tarp.  Parents are encouraged to find a spot around the parade route for Kodak moments. After the parade, it would be really helpful to assist your child to change into school clothes and take all Halloween costumes home.  Classes will resume, as normal, for the remainder of the day.

On Friday, November 4th, the Kindergarten keiki will be walking to Kauakini Health  System to  bring cheer, smiles,  and  to sing Japanese songs to older adults  who are cared for at their comprehensive facility called Hale Pulama Mau  (House of Cherishing Care).  We'll be leaving school at 9:30am, and returning by 11:00am.  I would like to have 2 parents to help chaperone this walking  event. Please advise if you are available.
