What a busy week!  Besides learning about Presidents Washington and Lincoln and enjoying Jump Rope for Heart, we measured objects around the class. The highlight of the week was having fun at Dole Plantation where we rode on the Pineapple Express Train, getting lost in The Maze and seeing different sizes of pineapple. Our favorite part was the Dole Whip...mmmmm, good!

A note from Mrs. Lee:

Aloha Parents,

Jukei has returned to live in Japan. We are very sad because he was a kind and awesome friend to us.  Wishing him a fond aloha and hope to see him when he visits Hawaii.

Please continue to encourage daily reading at home. This will boost your child's confidence, fluency, and writing skills. I mentioned myON Reader as a fun, online site which can also be downloaded on your tablet. Your child will have access to over 1000 digital books that suits their interest and reading level to provide just the right amount of challenge to advance their reading skills.  The interactive digital format brings books to life with audio support, friendly quizzes, and a dictionary. (The app does not provide quizzes, but is still a wonderful way to motivate your child to read independently.  You are also able to download up to 20 books on your tablet.)

The 100 Day projects were admired by all the parents and students who passed the Kindergarten classes today.  It meant so much to your keiki and they were thrilled to share it.  Mahalo for all your time, effort, and planning to complete the board. You are such a positive influence in your child's life.

Warmest regards,
Mrs. Lee

K-1 On the Go

In Kindergarten we enjoy doing things in small or big groups. We are forever on the go and into everything.  We are active students involved in the going-ons.  That is our learning style!

A note from Mrs. Lee:

In Social Studies we're learning about special things families and friends do and how they spend  time together.  Therefore, please have your child bring in 1-2 photos of fun times or events they have shared with their family or friends.  They will also be asked to describe why that time was important.  Kindly have them bring in their photos by Wednesday, August 22nd.

Environment Print (EP) is the print of everyday life and is everywhere.  It is a natural starting point to teach young students to read, write, and do math.  They have a concrete connection to everyday print. They read it within the context of their interests and backgrounds.  We would be most appreciative of any labels from packages, boxes, fliers, paper bags, snack bags, etc. that you could send in for our EP Wall.
Announcements:
  • Show and Tell is on Wednesdays and Fridays.
  • P.E. days are on Friday.
  • Monday, August 20 - Student Council Snack Bar starts from 2:35-3:00 at the Middle School picnic bench.
  • Monday, August 20 - Library books due

Lots of Spots

Math is so much fun, especially when we share ideas and answers with our partners.  We're learning about subtraction right now and need more practice at home.  Can you please help us?

Jack and the Beanstalk

Jack and the Beanstalk is a  timeless folktale loved by children around the world.  The K-1 keiki enjoyed listening to the story and seeing the illustrations from the picture book. But, do you wonder what Jack would look like if you cut and glued parts of his body together with construction paper through the eyes of  a Kindergartener? The students were so excited as they created, collaborated and shared their version of Jack.  They also used their Math skills to measure various parts of his body.

When asked what they liked about this activity, their responses were genuine and spontaneous.

Bastien - Helping my friends doing the things I need to do
Reise - When we measured Jack
Zaffron - When the pants were big and fat
Sydney - When we measured the shirt

Michael - When we had to cut and paste the pieces for Jack
Brooke - Gluing all the pieces to make Jack
Jake K. - Measuring Jack
Ashley - Everything
Mimi - It was fun because I like to make things.                                                                                Chase - Gluing on the shoes and measuring it                                                                                Stephanie - Doing the head and gluing the stuff on                                                                      Courtney - Gluing the pants and arms
Jake  L. - Measuring all the pieces                                                                                                   Christa - Working together                                                                                                                Aidan - Measuring the body

Junie B., First Grader (at Last!) by  Barbara Park is our current  Literature unit of study. This  story has fun plots and bridges the gap between summer school and the new school year that is quickly approaching. Have conversations with your child about their thoughts and feelings of entering first grade.

High Flying Fun

Our Spring Higan Service will be held on Monday, March 14th. It is a memorial service  held for our ancestors  during the week of 'Higan' in March and September. The purpose of the Higan  which means 'other shore'  is a goal of all Buddhists. We practice the Buddha's teaching in order to cross the river from this shore of illusions to the other shore of enlightenment by practicing the six paramitas. Please dress your child appropriately for the Temple Service.

Our walking field trip to Kuakini Hale Pulama Mau, visiting older adults, will be on Friday, March 18th.  They will need to wear their HMS t-shirts and sport shoes.

The keiki are continuing the addition concept. They've enjoyed adding with dominoes, coins, and working on  the IWB to reinforce this concept. You can also enrich their skills  everyday by:
  • playing games that involve numbers
  • adding items in different groups
  • making math connections  when you are at home, in the sun or on the run
Understand the concepts of addition and capable of communicating how to add in order to use math in school and on the job are essential skills.

Cody has shared his day with Keikiokekai on the Teddy Bear blog.  Click here to view his post.

The massive earthquake and ferocious tsunamai that hit Japan on Thursday was a tragedy that we are all sad to hear about. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the people of Japan  who we share a bond and friendship with.

March into March

Monday was one of the best P.E. days for the students as they began swimming lessons with Ms. Whitney and Mr. Kimura at the helm. The newbies and experienced swimmers enjoyed the class by splashing water on themselves, giggling and swimming.  The children were familiar with the routine of showering before entering the pool and changing themselves afterwards which helped make the P.E. class run smoothly.

K-1 celebrated reading with Dr. Seuss in the classroom on Wednesday, March 2nd.  Besides listening to some of his stories, they enjoyed 'green eggs' and partnered with their 4th grade buddy in a writing/illustration lesson.

They have been sharpening their concept of addition with numerous hands-on and engaging activities.  Ask them to explain their work that is on display.

Ms. Marj, a former HMS Counselor, was invited as a guest reader on Friday.  The children were all ears when she read Too Many Mangos, By Tammy Paikai. The story, with a local flavor, is about Tutu Kane  who asked his grandchildren Kama and Nani to pick some mangoes from his tree. When Tutu Kane realized that they had picked  too many mangoes, he sends Kama and Nani to share some with the neighbors. While doing this, they were given goodies in return for their generosity.  Ms. Marj  also brought samples of our delicious fruit for everyone to taste and a fresh mango. Some students hadn't seen a mango from the tree.  During this read-aloud,  they shared the excitement and sheer fun of a new book with its  local characters. Children  also learned that sharing can bring much joy to others as well as to themselves.
Mahalo to everyone with your donations and/or offering to assist with the K-1 game at the HMS Fair on Saturday, March 19th. Please advise either Mrs. Nagamine or myself if you need to make any changes for your shift.

Reminders:
P.E. (swim days) is scheduled for Mondays. There is no P.E. on Thursdays.  Please remember their plastic bag, as well as their towel, swim clothes, slippers, goggles,  etc.  should be labeled with their name and grade. The lost and found box  is overflowing with numerous unlabeled items.
