Bishop Museum Learning Trip

It was a beautiful sunny day when we visited Bishop Museum today.  Besides watching the 'Up in the Sky' show in the Planetarium, we learned all about the different planets, played Hawaiian instruments, and saw huge extreme bugs that really moved.  The 'Extreme Bugs' exhibit will be ending soon, so hopefully our parents can take us to visit Bishop Museum again really soon.

Aloha Parents,

K-1 and their 7th grade buddy class  have started to practice for the  play, 'An Earth Day Story'.  It would be most beneficial if you could help your child memorize their parts and be comfortable with their scene.  They are quite excited working on this dramatization as they love being with their older buddies.

If your child wishes to share Easter goodie bags with his/her classmates, they  can be brought to school either Thursday, March 21st or Friday, March 22nd.

Swimming Fun

Swimming lessons have started.  This is the best part of P.E.

Another free digital collage by Smilebox Aloha Parent,   The keiki are having a great time in school  They are blossoming and I see their academic growth daily.  Continue to encourage myON Reader as much as possible as it is a valuable tool.  The minimum amount of books assigned to be read monthly will remain at 6 but there are many students who have exceeded that number.  Please remember that this myON program helps in oral reading fluency, silent reading fluency, and so your child hears an appropriate voice with good inflection and rhythm. Being a fluent reader can lead to better writing and vocabulary skills. While being able to read with fluency is important for comprehension and enjoyment, it is only one of the important elements in reading.   Remember these dates: Monday, March 11th - Library books due. Thursday, March 14th - Spring Higan Service, 9:00 in the Temple.  Please dress appropriately. (Girls - dresses or pants outfits, Boys - collared shirts and long pants) Friday, March 15th - Bishop Museum Field Trip.  Please wear the HMS t-shirts and sport shoes.  No P.E. swim class. Celebrating Dr. Seuss

Yeah for Math and Science

Our tomato, green onion, green bean, and sunflower seeds were planted.  The hardest part is to practice Kshanti by being patient and waiting for them to grow into vegetables or flowers!!!!

Life Learning Activities

What a busy week!  Besides learning about Presidents Washington and Lincoln and enjoying Jump Rope for Heart, we measured objects around the class. The highlight of the week was having fun at Dole Plantation where we rode on the Pineapple Express Train, getting lost in The Maze and seeing different sizes of pineapple. Our favorite part was the Dole Whip...mmmmm, good!

Comparing and Ordering by Size

Playing games is so much fun in Math class.  We stood side by side for our first game called 'Tall, Taller, Tallest'.  Later, we gathered all sorts of toys around the room to compare and order them by size. That was hard work!

Aloha kakou Parents,

The Kindergarten students are celebrating Career Month! Several parents have volunteered to share information about their chosen careers to the keiki.  Dr. Yagi, Sophie's Mom,who is a dentist, visited us today and spoke about Dental Health and those nasty cavity bugs! Everyone was given a bag with some useful dental products too.  Also on tap to visit is an Orthopedic Surgeon, a Sumotori, and a Hairdresser.

On Thursday afternoons, the students will have fun in the Computer Lab under my instruction.  They were introduced to Kerpoof, a children's entertainment and educational website produced by Disney. Registered under my Kerpoof teacher account, everyone was assigned a username and password.  They are all jazzed about this site which will help them learn through creativity!

Aloha Parents,

In the past, I have mentioned myOn Reader, a personalized reading online program with thousands of digital books. It is a way to engage your keiki at his/her level based on his/her interests. Beginning in February, I am encouraging every student to read a minimum of 6 books a month. 

This is the future in reading. We need to give the keiki the opportunity to choose what they want to read, in a digital environment in which they are comfortable, and motivate them to become better and more confident readers.

Swim classes with Ms. Whitney and Mr. Kimura will commence  the week of March 4th and end the week of May 10th.  More information will be provided later this month.

The children have developed their speaking skills beyond the 'Show and Tell' activity. It will not be part of our schedule any longer.
